IFG Freedom of Speech Policy - International Foundation Group (IFG)
Loading...

IFG is committed to upholding freedom of speech and academic freedom within the law, recognising these as essential to learning, critical thinking and intellectual development. Students and staff are encouraged to question ideas, explore different perspectives, and engage in open discussion, including on challenging or controversial topics, as part of their educational experience.

This freedom is not unlimited. IFG balances the right to freedom of expression with its legal duties to protect students and staff, promote equality and inclusion, and maintain a safe and respectful learning environment. Speech or activity that is unlawful, incites hatred or violence, amounts to harassment, or undermines the rights and dignity of others is not permitted. The policy explains how IFG applies these principles in practice, including in relation to teaching, student work, events, and external or visiting speakers.

This policy sets out what students can expect when expressing views, how IFG manages external speakers and events, and the responsibilities that come with academic freedom. IFG’s approach aims to support robust but respectful debate, while ensuring that learning takes place in an environment where all members of the community feel safe, valued and able to participate fully.
